Why we are angry
Asylum seekers and refugees are one of the most vulnerable groups in our society. Under international law, the UK has a duty to provide them with protection and treat them with respect.
But instead of being made to feel safe, asylum seekers and refugees are greeted with fear, hostility and prejudice. They are forced to live in poverty and not allowed to work.
Who is to blame
In recent years, the popular press has conducted a targeted anti-asylum
campaign. Asylum seekers and refugees are vilified and scape-goated. Too
many people who need protection in the UK are refused it by the government.
Asylum seekers are left destitute or locked up for no good reason.
Why this is wrong
People who have suffered so much already should not face this sort of hostility from the press and politicians when they get to the UK. Ill-informed media coverage has contributed to heightened local tensions and resentment of asylum seekers. They deserve a fair hearing and a fair deal. No asylum seeker should be living in destitution or be held in detention.
The Refugee Council is not prepared to put up with this any more and nor should you be. Take action now!
